DCSS Term 1 Week 8
Calendar of Events
A Word From The Principal

The past two weeks have been very busy with Naplan, sporting events and of course Harmony Week. Thankfully Cyclone Alfred got out of our way and Naplan was able to proceed on time. It is important to remember that Naplan is a snapshot in time. It provides our school with another lens to see how students are progressing with their learning and informs next steps for our teachers.
Harmony Day was a wonderful story of inclusion and happiness. Chappy Tracy and her band of merry helpers from Years 5 and 6, did a wonderful job by putting on fun lunchtime activities for everyone to enjoy. At Delaneys Creek we are proud to say that we are a very inclusive school and continually strive to make everyone feel like they belong. Belonging and Engagement is one of our three big focus areas for 2025.

Clean Up Australia Day- Friday Week 8, our whole school pitched in to clean up our school grounds and around the classrooms. The Eco Marines have also made a challenge for each year level area to keep their part of the school clean for the term. Each year level can earn minutes towards extra play in the last week. On Thursday, I was invited to attend one of our Eco Marine’s afternoon tea meetings in the vege garden. The students were sharing their ideas for their 2025 project. It was exciting to hear what they have planned and it will be interesting to see which ideas they finally settle on. Our Eco Marines are certainly passionate.

T-Ball Gala Day- from all reports, everyone had a great time at T-Ball Gala Day last Friday. Mr Appelman always runs an amazing event where students get to enjoy putting their PE skills into action. Check out our sports page in this edition for pictures on the day.
Week 10 is only just two weeks away and it is going to be a cracker. On the Monday we have our annual cross country. All grades participate in the cross country however, only the 10-12 year old students will be eligible to represent at the District level. Ribbons will be presented at the Wednesday parade. Our Year 6 student leaders will be selling ice blocks for $1.50 to raise money for the Student Council's end of year gift to the school. These can be pre-purchased on the Qkr App.
On the Tuesday afternoon, Mrs Kirk and the Year 6 students will once again be running our very special Easter Bonnet Parade, with classes performing a song. Families are invited to attend and are encouraged to start arriving from 1.15pm for a 2pm start. The P & C will be drawing the Easter Raffle at the end.
Parent/Teacher Interviews- teachers will be looking forward to meeting parents early Term 2 where they can share how students are progressing and what their next steps will be heading towards their Semester Two report card. Parents will be sent a link to the booking app, where you can register what time you want to meet the teacher.
Whole School Expectations
Over the past two weeks, we have continued to learn about our brain and our emotions, with this coming week’s focus being resilience. Families are encouraged to use the same language at home to support children with understanding their brain and how they can better regulate their emotions.
In our last newsletter, you were introduced to the language we use to describe the parts of our brain.

Have you ever heard the term, ‘they’ve flipped their lid’? Have you ever seen your child ‘flip their lid’ and have a melt down? This is how we explain to children what is happening in their brain.
The Amygdala is the emotional part of our brain and it will send you messages before it fires:
- Butterflies in your stomach
- Fast beating heart
- Hot face
- Sweaty lip
- Clench teeth
- Tense fists
- Wriggly body
If we act on these signals, and do one of the behaviours from the Pause Process (see diagram), we have a good chance of calming our Amygdala down before it completely fires and sends our Prefrontal Cortex and Hippocampus offline, hence the term ‘flipping your lid’.
