A Word From The Principal

Anzac Day was our most prominent event for Week One. At our school service on Wednesday, we were so fortunate to have special guests from our community, Mr Bob Patterson, President of the Woodford RSL Sub Branch, Mr Jim Hennessey, school patron, Mrs Kay Hennessey, wife of Mr Kevin Hennessey, Mrs Ruth Hewitt and Mrs Lyn Robinson. The school leaders did a wonderful job of leading our school service, but it was our Sunshine Singers who really stole the show with their very moving version of The Last Anzac. On the Friday our students also participated in the community services, with Levi Gatt reciting the poem Sir at the Dawn Service and Grace Lowe reciting the Uniform Resolution. We were all thrilled to see the sun come out in time for the community march. I am also happy to report that our Year 6 poppies raised $384.40 with all money going towards the Australian War Memorial.

EcoMarines Tangalooma Adventure Day - On Thursday the 1st of May, our four Eco-Marine Ambassadors accompanied by Mrs Stanley, went to Tangalooma to participate in a fun filled day of training. Some of the highlights from the day were meeting Ranger Stacey from Totally Wild, examining coral and determining if it was healthy or not, team building games, testing the PH level of water and making clean water by using a filter. We got to meet other Eco-Marine Ambassadors from other schools and learn about what they have been doing with their schools. The best part of the day was learning about the dolphin feeding program at Tangalooma and feeding one of the dolphins, Rani. He was a little bit cheeky and tried to take the other dolphins food. We also got to meet the new baby dolphin, Eclipse who swam by us to say hello. They all had an amazing time and learnt a lot at Tangalooma. Our EcoMarine Ambassadors were able to collaborate with other schools and organisations. Stay tuned to the Eco-Marines for some exciting events coming up for our school!

Guidance Officer Week - this week was Guidance Officer Week and it was an opportunity for our school to acknowledge Mrs Melissa Thiess as our GO. Guidance officers are specialist teachers who deliver a broad range of services to school community members. They contribute to the development of a comprehensive student support and wellbeing program that is responsive to the needs of the school community.
Guidance officers may work directly with students in addition to working with a student's teachers, school support personnel, family, other specialists or external support providers.
Support offered by guidance officers includes providing advice and counselling on educational, behavioural, vocational, personal, social, family, and mental health and wellbeing issues.
School mobile - Did you know our school mobile is not attended all day? The school landline number (5434 6333) should be your first option to contact the school.
Just popping in? Parents and carers must go to the office before going to their child’s classroom. Going to the office first helps keep our students and staff safe. Coming to the office first also reduces the number of interruptions to learning.
Parent Teacher Interviews will be occurring across the next week with Wednesday evening being our “Speed meeting night”. Parents are offered 2 face to face interviews a year, and it is important to attend as it shows your child that you are invested in their education. Working in tandem with the class teacher provides your child with the greatest opportunity to achieve their goals and move forward in their learning.
Have a wonderful fortnight.

Whole School Expectations
Whole School Expectation - BE AN ACHIEVER (Goal Setters=Goal Achievers)
This week our focus rule is all about setting goals and achieving. Over the holidays teachers have compiled each student’s achievement results from Term One and will now be working with the students to identify their individual learning goals. Having a goal is one thing but knowing how to go about achieving that goal is another. To help students understand how to go about achieving their learning goals we give them 4-5 steps they can follow. These steps are: -
- Come to school on time and with the right attitude. Missing school days or coming late/leaving early can really impact learning. How can you know what to do if you always feel like you are playing catch up. For this tip we relate it to being part of a sports team or any other group. If you turn up late to training, you won’t know how to play.
- Have a Growth Mindset and use the power of Yet. Students need to understand that we are all constantly learning and just because something may be hard or tricky, doesn’t mean they won’t learn it eventually. They just don’t know it yet.
- Break big tasks into smaller, more manageable parts. If our bedroom is a big mess and we’ve been told we can’t go out to play till it’s clean, that can seem overwhelming. If we break this job into parts e.g. Putting away our toys first, clothes second and other things third, will make the job seem easier.
- Work together. This might be giving someone some encouraging words if we see they are having trouble. Giving them an example to follow or checking in to make sure you are on the right track.
Parents are encouraged to help children use these ideas at home.
Last week our rule was the BE RESPECTFUL because manners matter. Our school nailed this rule last week and were picture perfect at both the school and community Anzac Day Services.

Beyond The School Gates
In our last newsletter we heard that Tristan Bagby in Year 5 would be competing in the State Softball Titles. We are happy to update our school community that he performed extremely well and was awarded Bronze. His team had a chance at the gold, but the very wet weather conditions closed the tournament earlier than expected.
Well done, Tristan. We are all proud of you.

Sunshine Singers News
On Wednesday 23 April, our Sunshine Singers sang in our ANZAC Day Ceremony. The song was called The Last ANZAC, composed by Primary School teacher Michael Travers from Victoria. The song was to pay homage to the lives of all the ANZACs who fought on the battlefields of Gallipoli in World Ward One, but especially the life of Alec Campbell, who was our ‘last ANZAC’. Alec was born in 1899 and signed up for the war when he was only sixteen. He passed away in 2002 at the age of 103.
When I found this song in an old singing book and read through its lyrics, I knew the Sunshine Singers would be able to bring it to life in such a beautiful way. But there was one problem … I did not have any backing music for the song… I found the composer’s email address attached to a YouTube clip and contacted him directly, asking where I might be able to purchase the backing track. Mr Travers graciously sent through the music for us to sing with, at no cost.
As expected, the Sunshine Singers sang beautifully and lifted the hearts of many to honour our ANZACs. As their singing filled our Giraffe Shed, they were joined with a chorus of Kookaburras who flew through our parade and perched on the electrical lines beside us. They helped us truly be grateful to live in such a wonderful country with freedoms awarded us from our brave ANZACs.
On Friday, the rain hovered through the Woodford Memorial ANZAC Day Service and our Sunshine Singers ended the service with The Last ANZAC before the heavens broke open again. So many community members came to thank me for the sweet voices of our choir and the respect our students showed throughout the service. They were touched by Mr Traver’s song and there were many tears shed in remembrance. Thank you, Mr Travers for your talents in writing something so beautiful, thank you Mums and Dads and Caregivers for supporting our incredibly talented performers and thank you Sunshine Singers for giving a voice to those who have gone before us and helping us remember. Lest we forget!
- Mrs Kirk
