DCSS Term 3 Week 2
Calendar of Events
A Word From The Principal

It was lovely to see our students return for Term 3 and share their holiday adventures with their friends and the staff.
We have certainly hit the ground running by diving into our Term 3 units of work. Staff work super hard to make the learning engaging and challenging. Your child’s Curriculum Overview for Term 3 can be found in this newsletter, and I encourage you all to use this as a conversation starter with your child about their learning. On the Semester One report cards, the teachers outlined student successes and possible next steps for both their academic and social emotional progress. This week, students began setting goals to match these next steps for learning. Parent teacher interviews will be occurring again this term, so please look out for the booking link in the coming weeks.
School Review
As indicated in earlier newsletter editions, this term is when the School Improvement Team will be visiting our school to review how our school has been progressing since the 2021 Review. Since 2021, our school has enjoyed many successes both as a community and most importantly, our student’s academic success. Our introduction of Organic Learning, as a way of integrating subject areas, has increased student engagement and learning outcomes.
During Week 4, members of the Review Team will be at the front gate and around the school speaking with parents and community members about how you/they think our school is progressing.
Dion Drummond - NAIDOC Week
Once again, our NAIDOC Week performer did not disappoint. Staff, students and family members who attended, report that Dion was fabulous and engaging for the full 90 minutes. Every year, for the past three years, our school has had a different indigenous performer come and entertain as part of our recognition of aboriginal culture.
Athletics Carnival
Thank you to Mr A, staff and family members who pitched in to support the running of our 2025 Athletics Carnival. We were certainly a little concerned that the weather would not be on our side, however the skies stayed blue all day. The P & C canteen, along with Shayla’s Brews and Bakes, provided some delicious food and drinks, as well as raising some money to support the P & C initiatives. Many thanks to those of you who have taken the time to provide us with positive and constructive feedback.
Prep Enrolments
2026 Prep enrolments are now due as we will sending out enrolment interview times in the coming weeks. If you haven’t yet enrolled your child, please contact admin for an enrolment pack.

Story Dogs
This term we welcome Belinda Frazer and Polly the Story Dog to our school. Belinda and Polly will be attending school every week to read with students from Year 2.
Story Dogs is a reading support program where selected children read to an accredited dog and its handler.
Story Dogs mission is to Make reading fun for children, so they become confident, lifelong readers. No child should be left behind in literacy. Belinda and Polly help our students improve their reading skills by listening, not judging, and having fun reading. This helps to improve the student’s focus, reading skills and in turn their confidence soars.

Weekly Expectations
Week One, we spent the week revising our four school rules, be respectful, be responsible, be safe and be an achiever. Week One is always a good opportunity to restate expectations across all areas of the school.
Week Two is always about goal setting and reflecting on what our next steps in learning will be. To do this, students use the NED approach. NED stands for Never Give Up, Encourage Others and Do Your Very Best.
Students are also being reminded to take themselves out of a situation if they can feel themselves getting cranky. Students are told to go and get a drink, go to the bathroom, go and sit down. When they are ready to go back and play, they need to tell the teacher that they are coming back after being cranky. We encourage students to do this as often they think they are calm, but they actually aren’t and can be triggered again.

Play Break in eXplore
During play break, children can choose to play in the eXplore as well as in the playgrounds. There are colouring activities and games every day. Karen Wade (Teacher Aide) and Chappy Tracy organise a wider range of art and craft activities on Thursday and Friday. This term started off with pom pom making and plate painting. A group of girls were teaching their friends how to make paper bags, one student has continued with the knitting from last term, and we will again start up French Knitting in the next few weeks. The discussion Karen and Tracy have been having is, ‘How do we turn the French Knitting into useful things like beanies?’

Programs
Last term I ran a Year 3 girls' program during lunchtime. We explored strategies to help with managing friendships well. Some of these strategies were: Boundaries, positive self-talk, big dreams and how our words can help strengthen our friendships. The girls decorated their pages and put the strategies into display folders to refer to again when they need help negotiating challenging friendship issues.
I also worked with a group of Year 4 students to help improve communication skills in friendship groups.

Parking Regulations - To Ensure the Safety of Students, Parents, Caregivers, Teachers, and other members of the community.
The City of Moreton Bay regulates parking or stopping of vehicles on footpaths, bicycle paths, shared paths, dividing strips or nature strips. Please note that vehicles that are parked with two wheels on the footpath/nature strip and two wheels on the road is not considered as a lawful parking practice.
Council is legally obliged to enforce these regulations, and our Proactive School Safety Patrol Program contributes to this enforcement.
During Proactive School Safety Patrols, enforcement of unlawful parking is applied by obtaining photographic evidence and issuing a penalty infringement notice.
Council prefers that vehicle drivers are educated.
For more information in relation to parking regulation and expectation please see attached our Parking in School Zones Fact Sheet. Additionally, we recommend reviewing the City of Moreton Bay’s published material regarding parking Parking - City of Moreton Bay
